mold on eggs?

Amanda_D Mar 10, 2010 11:54 AM

What is your preferred method to prevent/treat mold on snake eggs?

I have gotten a pair of my corns to lock up several times and I am hopeful that eggs will be forthcoming. I will be taking steps to safely sterilize the incubator and vermiculite before the eggs show up to keep the risk to a minimum. I will do the same to the nesting box and peat moss.

This is not my first time breeding and I already have a proven incubator set up and experience. However I am one who feels that we never stop learning and the experience of others is always valuable.

Thanks for any info you share, and best of luck to all of you in your own projects.

I used athelete's foot spray once on some mold/fungus on eggs. The fungus never went away but it didn't spread anymore. The eggs did hatch; babies were fine.

Another time I tried rubbing alcohol. Eggs hatched OK too.

I wonder now if trying to treat the mold/fungus is unecessary, and if the treatment may potentially be harmful. Not sure. This is a guess on my part based on some ugly, untreated eggs I've seen hatch with a healthy neonate.

Curiously, in later years I never saw moldy eggs. Probably because I dumbed-down my incubator setup and provided low-ish temps. And instead of providing high humidity, I just kept the eggs from drying out and added water when needed.

I have never treated it and it has only overcome eggs that were not fertile. I usually leave it alone and it never seems to get horrible or affect the good eggs to an appreciable extent. I have heard atheletes foot powder/antifungal powders work.
