Brand new BP owner

Droptine8 Mar 11, 2010 05:24 AM

So I'm going to try a BP again.First time, 3 years ago,not so good,,would NOT eat for me.
Last Sat. I picked up a nice normal color BP,,about 4 long,,female,so I was told.On Sunday offered a small rat,,slam bam,down the hatch.I'm happy !!!!
I have her set up in a 66 qt.steril lite tub.Humidity is easier to keep up in the tub.
My questions are: how high should I keep the humidity ?, also when feeding her, how large a rat should I feed ?.Her head and neck seem seem so small, compared to her mid section.
Thanks for any help.

Himidity about 50-60% give or take 5%. Rats should be about the size of the largest part of the snake. Around I mean. One that size should be fine with medium to large rats. Good Luck with her. Let see some pics!!!

Thanks for the response bigbearhook. The tub seems to be running in the mid 70's for humidity.I am useing one of those battery operated stick on temp/hydrometer guages, I think it does an OK job. With my kings and corns(and a bull snake)humidity was not much of a big deal. From what I have heard, it is very important for BP.Her water bowl is big, so this could be keeping the humidity up..I don't want to have to worrie about respitory issues.
She has to be as big around as my wrist,,maybe bigger. That works out to a GOOD size rat.Feeding once a week should be OK, right ?
Thanks again

Once a week or every other week will be just fine. I'd say medium rats will be just fine every 7-14 days. I'd try to punch a couple more holes in the tub. Mid 70's can be a little high except when shedding. You want it 50-70 when not shedding and 70-80 during shed to help. Too high all the time can result in respitory and bacterial infections.

OK,,thanks bbh.I did not put as many holes in this tub as I normally would,,so I will drill more.I think the substrate(aspen)might be holding the humidity up a bit.
More holes should do the trick. When I want the humidity on the higher side, I can just cover some of the holes, should work.
Thanks again bigbearhook
