baby al questions

dre17am Sep 21, 2003 01:42 AM

I caught two baby S. aligator lizards today, I've kept als before so I know how to take care of them, but I've never had any this small, so I have some questions.
First, they have a stripe down their backs instead of the normal banding, when does this change?
Second, how long does it take them to reach sexual maturity?
Third, since they are the same size, can I keep them in the same inclosure (say a 10 gal aquarium)?

The color will change gradually over their 1st year of life. But, by 6 months you should have a fairly good idea of what their adult coloration will look like.

It will take them about 2 years to reach sexual maturity.

A ten gallon tank is plenty large for two hatchlings. But, as they approach adult size you may want to consider upgrading.

Another important thing to remember with baby als is that they will need a lot of calcium so make sure you get a supplement and dust their food regularly.

Hope this helps, and have fun with your new pets!

yup, got calcium, uv, pvc pipes, clay pots, even got a 20 gal aquarium (cept there are some goldfish that sorta need it right now, they are gettting a pond soon). THanks for the advice, I'm really hoping they will have the red color that the big guy I saw had, most of the ones around here are more yellow brown.
Do adults eats pinky mice? is this good/bad for them or something more as a supplement rather then a staple?

Pinki mice are fine as a treat, if you can get your als to take them. I raised my big guys on insects and they've refused pinkis every time I offered them so I finally gave up.

Sounds like your guys have found a good home!
