Black Janseni

Thought I would post a picture of my latest additions. Stunning looking animals. Sorry about the thermometer probe, never was a photographer!!

Have been keeping Gonyosoma for some time, thought these would make a nice addition.

Although I have bred the Gonyosoma a couple of times I have not had consistant results. Anyone got any thoughts on cycling this species??

Cheers

Mark

Hi Mark,

Gonyosoma seem tricky. I've got six right now and have been getting fertile eggs out of one of the females for several months. Unfortunately I lost all of them in a move and a subsequent flood in my area.

At the time I had this particular pair together I had several snake species in the same room and the only "cycling" I was doing was to shut off all heat sources at night. I routinely was getting temps in the mid to upper sixties and did find evidence of copulation in the early morning hours.

I had a journal of temps, etc. on index cards but lost those in the flood as well.

For reference, I'm only referring to G. oxycephala, not G. janseni.

The Denver Zoo is getting fertile eggs out of their "black" janseni about every time they pair them up. To my understanding they are not doing anything special to cycle theirs.

Lastly, I've spoken to a small handful of people who have kept both "black" janseni and the tan/black-tailed type. All seemed to agree that the blacks were generally easier to care for, acclimate, get fertile eggs from, etc.

Mark, do you have any tips on egg incubation in G. oxycephala? The one good clutch I had died and dried up in the egg about the time I was moving. I have several possible scenarios as to why this happened but would appreciate your advice.

Please send me an e-mail if you don't mind.

Should clarify that I lost all of the eggs during the move/flood, not the animals.
