R u the only snake lover in your house?

Skyfire_1 Mar 16, 2010 07:05 PM

Just a curiosity question. My wife does not like snakes at all, am I the only one in here that is in this situation? There is no way I can get her involved in my hobby whatsoever, and not to mention ever to even hold one.

But I still think I am lucky because I do have a few Ball Pythons that she tolerates, because of their size, and calmness. But just recently I got her to OK me to look for a Boa (male) that will not get to be larger than the eight foot area. Oh yeah, docile would be a plus for the two of them to live in the same house, which brings me to the next question I want to ask in this forum. I’ll post below.

I am extremely fortunate to have grown up in a house filled with snakes while growing up. My father had a collection that numbered in the seventies while i was growing up, including venomous and non-venomous. My mother is as fascinated by snakes as my father and i am, though my 2 older brothers and sisters were not as enthusiastic So i am far from being the only snake lover in my house

No, I am in the exact same situation. In a way it's good, though, keeps the obsession in check.

It's like that in my house too. My wife won't go near them, or help me with the smallest tasks in the snake room. My 4 year old son could care less too. Hah. One of the benefits of her not going into my snake room? I don't have to run new arrivals by her and she doesn't know if I purchased a new one. Im fortunate though, she still let's me keep them and let's me dedicate a whole room to them, and also sends emails, phone calls etc. to help against the bans and bills against us reptile owners. If they can at least tolerate them, it's a good thing.

How do I quote that message! Same thing here. My 4 yo son is more interested in the baby rats then the snakes!I am on my own but will buy stuff and the wife never knows!

I've been in the same situation as you. As far as getting another boa, I'd recommend Dumeril's Boa. They are totally mellow, and the males are typically 6ft when full grown. Additionally, the care requirements are really straightforward. 70-85 degree temperature range (they prefer to hang out at about 83 degrees). It's best to keep them between 40-60% humidity, but can handle much lower (I used to live in Las Vegas). Anyhow, best of luck balancing your wife and your snakes. Below are pictures of my Dumeril's.

Since I live alone I am the only one in the house that likes them. When I visit the folks (about a 2 hr drive) for the holidays I bring a few of the smaller ones(mainly carpets) along. My mom will finally hold them as well as my dad. She's a cat person so it took some time for her to get over them not being furry, but even growing up they tolerated them.

I don't post much but couldn't resist this one.

It's half and half for me.

Wife hates them, she is absolutely petrified of them. She thinks they look incredible but just cant get over her fear. Still, she allows me to have a dedicated room and a fairly nice sized budget to spend on them. I am lucky to have her!

I have a 5 year old daughter that absolutely loves them. She has even adopted a few of them and claims they are hers. She currently "owns" an EBV X Aby Salmon (she likes all the pink, i try to tell her it is a male but she wont have it, "pink snakes are girls!" and a little Longi female (still dont know why she likes that one so much).

I have 2 more daughters, 3 year old and 6 month baby. Dont know about the 6 month old but the 3 year old seems to like them. So all and all i consider myself fortunate.

Well here is a normal situation for snake lovers here is how i would address it my other half hates boas too lmao. As for a male boa obviously you need to get one that is everything you want it to be because it may be your only one. So i would find a morph that you cant live with out and get it. Two ideas for you to ponder one i would get a dwarf boa they come in everything that the Columbian's do with out the size. (most are under five feet) second find a breeder that has the reputation for awesome breed types. As for your wife get her a reptile she couldnt live without for my other half it is poison dart frogs (gets their attention off what your doing lmao) and in time they will get use to the idea and make it easier on you. This is what worked for me and this is strictly my opinion what you do with it is up to you lmao good luck

Well...I used to be terrified (beyond terrified) of snakes. One day my husband said we are going to go get a snake. It started with one little baby royal python. The deal was my husband was to care for clean the cage and I was in NO way shape or form going to feed the snake. Well less than a year later we had 24 snakes, including a successful clutch of 10 blood pythons and a 10 foot burmese python that we rescued who had a broken neck and I had to assist feed 2 times a week. By that time I had been bitten by a blood python (he was just a naughty snake), one of the royals (during feeding time of course), a couple of Amazons and one snotty kingsnake (he doesn't mean anything by it...he just bites when he is hungry). Unfortunately we had to rehome most of our snakes when my husband joined the military and we had to move cross country but there were 5 that we wouldn't part with...which meant that I (the one that HAD been beyond terrified of snakes) loaded up the car with 5 snakes and two doxies and drove cross country to our new home. Oh yeah I should probably mention that of the 5 that we kept 4 were mine and I let my husband keep one of his...course to be fair of the 24 that we had I think only 2 were totally his. So there is hope for people who are the only snake lovers in their homes!!!

I'm the only one in my house so that makes it easy.

My last ex was very accepting of my snakes, he'd hold them and take pics for me but I couldn't get him to clean their enclosures ha! The ex before that hated all my snakes and did his best to pressure me to downsize and was a MAJOR pain when I wanted to get something new. I'd much rather be alone then ever deal with that again!

My kids love our 2 snakes, wife is OK with them but not crazy. My father started me off with reptiles when I was young and I'm glad to be able to pass it down to my kids.
