No interest in the females

matt7465 Mar 17, 2010 09:42 AM

I warmed up my animals starting about 1.5 weeks ago. I have put a few pairs together but the animals have shown no interest at all. I don't watch them all day but usually they are sitting at opposite sides of the enclosure. These are all virgin animals. What am I doing wrong? thanks

Quite possibly nothing wrong at all.

I've been warming mine for weeks and like every year I start second guessing it all and then eventually things start happening. Just last night I found three males working their respective females.

Take em apart every couple of weeks for a feed and keep em separated for several days before re-introducing.

I have been keeping them in a rack system which I hope to move away from after this year. I have two large arboreal enclosures that I am using to pair them up in. Which means both animals are being put into an unknown environment. should I just introduce the male into the females sweater box or is status quo OK? Also do you think 3 males is enough to court 6 females? thanks for your help.

I do not think tub breeding is the best idea, every time you check on them you can disturb the mood. The arboreal cage is better. I do breed most of mine in 1.2 groups.

One question, you mentioned "...the females sweater box..." As I understand sizing, a "sweater box" tub is around 15qt. I'm hoping you at least meant "blanket box" (30plus qt) or larger.

I introduced all my animals on jan 1st, im a bit earlier than you guys, where im living though. Of about 8 pairs, i saw 4 pairs getting busy straight away, 2 pairs after a few weeks, 1 pair never doing anything, and then one pair copulating for the first time last night. So 2.5months of me thinking the male was gay, and he suddenly gets his mojo going. As people have written before, the animals know what there doing better than we do
If everything bred instantly, where would the fun be?

cheers
