Slugs???

bigbearhook Mar 18, 2010 10:15 AM

I bred my female anery to my male creamsickle in mid january. She shed about 10 days ago. Last night when I checked on her, she was in her himid hide and had two slugs laid. I removed them and put in a better lay box. I felt her and felt a bunch more eggs inside of her. I left her alone and covered her up and this morning, still no more eggs. Is it common for females to lay infertiles a day or two before laying the whole clutch?

Yes, it is very common for females to lay infertile eggs just prior to laying the remaining viable eggs. Although they can certainly lay some more infertile ones during and after too.

I suspect that you will have a fair number of good eggs though, maybe even ALL the remaining ones...who knows. But for some reason, it is quite common to see infertile eggs deposited first.

good luck, and leave her in the dark undisturbed until later tonight, then carefully peek in on her to see how things are going. I like to just lift the clear lay tubs up and look in from underneath to see if I see any eggs usually before I disturb them any.

good luck!

THANKS! I just went home for lunch before I read this and checked on her. I opened the lay box just a little and saw a fertile egg. I didn't pry any more than that. I thought I'd wait till tonight and check again like you said. I'm very excited! This is the first clutch I've ever produced!

Thanks again,
Jared

Ok! so it's day two after the initial Infertiles and she laid another one(I thought it was a fertile last time I checked but it is a slug too) and still feels lumpy but still no eggs. Is this common or should I start getting concerned?

Don't do a thing yet!!. It is very common for them to lay a few slugs several days before the good ones. Just see how things pan out for a few more days.

good luck!, ~Doug

I agree with Doug......I to have had females drop a few slugs up to a week befor laying the actual clutch of GOOD eggs....Patiance is the killer, don't mess with her let her do her thing......

Ok the confusion continues. I took your advice and have left her alone. Now it's Tuesday and I checked her and she's in full shed. I thought she already had her pre-lay shed when she did about 10 days before the first slug. Now she's shedding again. Could it be the first shed wasn't the pre-lay and she still has a couple weeks before laying???

It seems a little odd, but if they bred in mid-January, she will be laying anytime now. Keep the moist lay box in there, and DON'T mess with her at all. You do not want to stress her into thinking her nest site is unsafe to lay in. If she is indeed going blue, she will very likely shed(and lay eggs) when she becomes active to shed in a few more days after her eyes clear up. Just make sure she has a dark moist place to lay them and leave her be nice and secluded. Not to worry.
