Is it me, or are things taking their sweet time coming out to play, eat and breed this year? Don't any of the critters realize that THIS week is my spring break and I have to be back at work next week?!?

Anyway,
Walking a creek at a local park, my 6-year old boy spotted this guy!

Todd,

Youre off to a better start then I am, I've been out twice & havnt seen anything yet.

Thats a good pic with your kid & the turtle, he looks pretty happy about inding it.

should say finding it, not inding.

Yeah man- thanks.

Stuff isn't quite up and moving here yet- that was all we found after about 2 hours walking those creeks.

Same time last year, we found a bunch of nerodia, a spiny softshell turtle, rough green, crawdads, etc.

Yeah, two of those were my first Herps of the year. Hopefully, its a good sign. Although we got a half inch of snow on the 1st day of Spring. Winter, please just go away..

...I saw some painted turtles today, but couldn't get close enough to see what subspecies. I think Midland or Southern.
I also saw my first lizard of the year, a Southern Prarie (swift). Good omen! But I got skunked on seeing my first live snake, as two girls saw a Texas Rat & shooed him away from the path. Just before I got there...
AARRRRGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!
Curse the luck. Oh well, didn't have my camera anyway. Did see some cool birds as well.
Great field day overall.

Is that a snapping turtle lurking in the algea at the upper left-hand corner of the photo?

Who knows...?

Cheers,
