New to southern Oregon

Mac65 Mar 20, 2010 05:52 PM

After living in Washington, California, Arizona and several states out east, I am now moving to the southern Oregon Coast. I am not looking for anyone's sweet spots. Exploring new areas is half the fun. I am interested in verifying California Mountain and California Kingsnakes in southwestern Oregon. I am also going to search for the patternless red phase Northwetern Garter Snake in the Siskiyous. Anyone familiar with this area? How productive is it? I look foreward to hiking all the mountain ranges out there and can't wait to see amphibians again. SO if anyone has any information on this area it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Mac65:
Can't help much as I live in Corvallis, Oregon and have only herped on or near the southern Oregon coast less than half a dozen times and mostly when just passing through.

The species I have encountered in Coos and Curry Counties in southwestern Oregon are three species of garter snakes (sirtalis, elegans, ordinoides), the Ringneck Snake, Rubber Boa, the new species of Contia, the Forest Sharp-tailed Snake, and the Common Kingsnake. A fourth species of garter snake (atratus) should be in that region, along with the Racer, Gopher Snake, N. Pacific Rattlesnake. I have no first hand knowledge as to just how far towards the coast the Calif. Mt. Kingsnake my occur in SW Oregon.

Thank you for the information. I am looking foreward to investigating this area over the summer. I am sure it will be very interesting as I have never been to this part of the country. I will post pics of whatever I come across.
