How long till silicone is safe?

snake_girl85 Mar 22, 2010 02:16 PM

We just built our first large scale cage (2x4x2 - for a rainbow boa), and we sealed the inside edges with silicone. It's been about 3 days, and there is still a strong smell inside. How long does it usually take to fully cure?

Thanks!

About 24 hrs for it to cure, and longer in cool temps or low humidity. Once cured, it is safe even if you still smell an odor as long as the odor can be tolerated easily by you with your head in the cage.

If you put some wood shavings in the cage, the odor will be absorbed by the substrate. Leave the cage door open and place the cage outside for a few hours. Then remove the substrate. It will be fine.

cure time is dependant on the ambient temperature. warmer temps = faster cure time....lower temps = longer cure times...usually 24-30hrs

to be sure that the silicone is cured you can use your finger nail and press lightly into the silicone, if it dents or makes a mark it's not cured.

to help with the smell, set it outside for several hours.

Well silicone is a must for a rainbow bow cage. They spill over there water bowls frequently and need high humidity. The clear label makes it pretty clear. I think its a few hours to the touch and 24-48 hours until its fully cured. But check the label to be safe. Also make sure that the fumes are out of the cage, 100% pure silicone gives off a very strong stench.
