Hognose envenomation

CBH Mar 22, 2010 09:39 PM

Not sure if I (or others) have posted this article, but it is a must read for all hognose owners...

Wiensein, S. A. a. D. E. Keyler. (2009). "Local envenoming by the Western hognose snake (Heterodon nasicus): A case report and review of medically significant Heterodon bites." Toxicon 54(2009): 354-360.

Cheers,
Chris

The article includes this statement:
"Although hognose snakes may uncommonly produce medically significant bites, they should not be considered dangerous or venomous."

My wife has a nack of finding her hands in the mouths of many of my Hognose (I don't know, maybe she is special :O)

She had nasty swelling and pain for about 24 hours and then everything was back to normal. She has been bitten by big and small, both reactions were the same.

Cute little buggers will stick anything in their mouths!

If you cannot get access to the article let me know, the photos are a must see....

I agree, hognose may be venomous, but should not be considered dangerous to humans. Recent research has revealed that a number of colubrid snakes contain venom, including but not limited to Garter snakes & Ringneck Snakes. Even commonly kept lizards (e.g. bearded dragons) are now known to have venom.

Cheers,

I know I am a little more careful around my hogs.... I don't fear for my life, but any sort of reaction would suck.

I have been bitten numerous times by one particular male... I have not had a bad reaction to the bite at all... Not even slight swelling... Obviously I do not let him chew on me when he gets me...
