Bad news in Fl.Press

ChristopherD Mar 23, 2010 04:31 PM

A keeper in Fl. got bust when foreclosure cleaners called in that a load of dead and uncared for snakes and aracnids were discovered in his foreclosed home...
I Really hate how the news makes it seem abnormal and without proof start talking about mis-managment one example is a rodent pro box was there and said he had rodes in the fridge
Doug it was Brevard Co. any input yet

having dead and poorly kept animals of any kind in the house man!! Sorry, media can only stretch it so far. I am sure they did indeed find dead snakes/animals in the house. Its not just herpers, same with other animals as well unfortunately. This type of exposure is bad for animal keepers period and is another nail in the coffin HSUS, PETA, and all the other left-wing groups will grab ahold of and use to their benefit to stop the keeping of ALL pet related animals.

Yeah, Rusty Green first told me about it, then I later saw it on the news too. Probably about 15-20 miles from where I live.

No doubt the place was very "mis-managed"(understatement of the century)..LOL!, as there were long-dead "liquified" pythons, and other snakes and such that were in real bad shape being kept in this foreclosed house with no electricity, etc...

Like Kevin said, just another nail in the coffin of an already teetering issue. Just what the general public wants to see, more snakes being kept extremely irresponsibly!!....ARRRGGHH!!!!

I'm glad that when they said the name of the owner, I didn't recognize it. I'd hate to even be a casual forum acquaintance of someone like that.

Can't remember what the dude's name was now, but I'm sure it will be in the reptile news section here, and certainly national news too. No news station wants to pass this "great" stuff up!

I have a few snakes from a foreclosure. Luckily someone knew someone who knew me. But yeah, people just leave the pets behind.

Here in So Cal one house was abandoned, and the owner had high dollar items like Gila monsters and coveted animals like Baja mtn kings and other zonata. Fortunately these were discovered before any succumbed.

You are correct, this bad press will be more fuel for the opposition.

Man...If it came to selling a few high dollar animals or getting foreclosed on I know what I'd choose...apart from the OMG how could they abandon them, there's a heavy element of WTF were they thinking in that...

I know, I couldn't believe it myself, and I asked the same question - why wouldn't they sell those Gilas?

And the answer was so simple - Gilas are illegal to keep and sell without permit. Guess what, no permit.

They probably did not have the appropriate documentation required to have half the stuff in their possession. I wonder how many legit herpers knew of their operation and turned a blind eye to it if that was indeed the case?

Unfortunately this is being painted in the negative for us. However this does effect all animals, dogs, cats, birds and reptiles. I can honestly say this happens far more often than you can imagine! This year it was 5 alligators so far... Last year it was a variety of lizards and snakes. Of course I know for every reptile that comes in there are 5 dogs/cats in the same situation.

Alligators?! O.o who takes those in? They've gotta tax resources...I can house/feed several retics no sweat but I can't afford to manage one juvy or larger gator.

I forgot to mention that the guys who do the crocodilian rescue do this for the love of the animals and do most costs out of their own pockets!

House full of dead snakes? Some people shouldnt own any animals or breed for that matter! I know that we all want to mind our own business BUT sometimes you gotta know when to step in and put a stop to someone you know who is keeping reptiles irresponsibly! IT IS OUR BUSINESS!
