My Russian tortoise had a fleshy protrusion sticking out of its rear end this morning. It was shaped like a flower and it pulsed. It had a small hole in the center. After about thirty seconds the protrusion drew back inside the tortoise. Can you tell me what it is?

I think that was its private thing.Is its tail sticking straight out or is it of to its side like by its legs.

if he got it back in there's nothing wrong, what you saw was his..uhm.. privates.. thats one of their ways of making sure everything works and airing it out.. in a way,
there's nothing wrong with him.

Whew! Thanks for the responses. It was very strange looking. Does this mean my tortoise is a girl? That sure didn't look like male privates. Oh and yes the tail was knd of to the side.

Yeah it is definitely a male. A tortoises penis is not going to look like a human mans.Where and when did you get him?

I got him about five years ago from California Zoological a reptile supplier here in Orange County Ca. And it did resemble a mushroom I guess

if it was prolasped intestine or something it wouldn't go back in
females dont fan, your little guy is deffinetly male
my male box turtles fans from time to time his looks like a purple mushroom, I've never seen a tortoise fan..(I dont keep torts)
