Ornate, Nile and Ornate Nile

oberon Mar 23, 2010 09:08 PM

I have been doing some reading on the nile monitor (v. Niloticus) as well as the Ornate Nile (v. Niloticus Ornatus). I have also come across the Ornate monitor (v. Ornatus), which seems to be used interchangably with the Ornate nile monitor and is difficult to find information about either of them.
Are there any definite sites to find info about all of these monitors?

The ornate monitor is the same beast as the ornate Nile monitor, it is just a matter of whether you are using the most current taxonomy (Varanus niloticus ornatus was upgraded to full species status several years ago, to Varanus ornatus). There is not much known about the ornate monitor. It is a large African jungle monitor with a very robust skull and powerful jaws. In captivity, they seem a bit more tractable than common Nile monitors, from my experience, although they are by no means likely to get tame and their ultimate size will require enormous dedication on the part of their keeper.
