Probing

pbcrenshaw Mar 24, 2010 04:42 AM

I have an almost 2 yo ball that was probed. I know 2-4 scales is a female and 6-8 is a male. I witnessed "Her" being probed and it was about 1/2". Is this just a wait and see? I have not witnessed any sperm plugs.

if it probes and pops a female....it should be a female.

unless the person probed incorrectly and pierced the inside causing it to seem a male.....did the person probe both sides?

Thanks. So 1/2"ish is a normal probe depth for a female. It sounded a little deeper than I was expecting.

1/2 inch sounds like a female, but it depends on the size of the female at 2 years. It's better to count ventral scales than measure it in inches. Also if it is a male and he's not relaxed the probe will not as accurate. The snake has to cooperate to some extent to be positive, and even the most experienced breeders make mistakes on occasion. You definately don't want to force the probe if they're not cooperating because you can seriously injur the snake. I prefer to pop them as hatchlings and then probe them after about a year for backup. Good Luck Chris
