A very important lesson !! power out

Albinosunlimited Mar 24, 2010 10:32 AM

Last week NY was hit with a very freak storm that left almost 200,000 people with out power. It took about a week for us to get power back on and it was the most stress full week we have ever had. Here is a short list of things we wish we had prepared for before the storm.

-A good generator ours did not work as well as we needed it 2
-snake bags, 1 bag for every snake and pre liable the bag
-flash lights in the reptile room
-zip ties /markers
-extra heavy duty extension cords
-extra tubs to told the snakes if you have to move them
-a safe place to move the animals

You never expect this to happen to you but it can I hope this make you think about and plan on what to do if you lose power

EXACTLY!!!!

Last year we lost power for 4 days in January's Ice Storm..... It was the WORST NIGHTMARE EVER!!!

I had 2 generators that could not handle my needs. WAY undersized.... it went down to 45F in my snake rooms ( it was 16F outside). I used every possible thing I could to heat the rooms ( I have 14 reptile rooms and a pet store ) until you could not get propane and then it really got cold. The state of NH was BLACK for the most part. I have never seen anything like that. You don't prepare yourself for such curve balls... "oh that won't or can't happen"... WRONG!

It did, I got my butt handed to me in sooo many ways. Amazing what it did.

Word to the wise... cold snakes with food in their guts = DEATH
Snakes get cold = Sterile snakes.
Snakes gravid while cold = sterile clutches
Incubator big fluctuations = BAD NEWS.

I got a much bigger generator now and can limp my way along whenever we lose power.

INVEST in a back up plan! As the weather seems to get crazier we are losing power more often. Expect the worst, I did not and I experienced a NIGHTMARE!!!

Better safe than sorry!

So it may not work for people with a lot of snakes, but for people with collections like mine...aka 5 snakes, a power converter for your car, some extension cords, and plenty of gas...and you could be ok.
Your car will have to idle for a long time, and it's not a permanent solution...but it could save some lives in a pinch.

For very small collection you can even use 2-3 heat packs and duct tape them to each tub and then bundle rack up with blankets. I would do that b4 running car for extended periods of time. If you really had to you could buddy up female snakes and cut it down to 2,3 or 4 tubs total.

Here in Florida we have hurricanes and lose power for 10 days or so, but it is really just an inconvenience compared to northern climates.

seems to be a lot of inconvenience coming from Florida these days!

for smaller collections.....one could use a couple of medium/large sized UPS'S along with a couple of inverters to power just the heat for the cages/racks.

......this setup works particularly well with flexwatt since the consumption of power is minimal.

Sorry for your NIGHTMARE Jon!!

One of the perks of living in Southern California is that our power never is lost for more than a few minutes and our weather is very forgiving -- at least the little weather we have. LOL

Best of luck this season -- GO COURT JESTER!!!!!!

I was wondering if you could put 10-20 candles in tubs with about a half inch of water in each, would this work for a small room? Just make sure you keep an eye on things. I would use those big three wick candles.
