Diamond Caimans

vipergirl65 Sep 21, 2003 02:36 PM

After seeing so many negative comments about the Diamond Caimans from people who are condemning them without ever seeing them,I decided to check them out for myself.I talked to Mitch at length about them before the purchase to get info on diet and habitat requirements and he was extremely helpful.I got 2 of the Diamond Caimans and I have to say that they are the most beautiful Caimans that I've ever seen. The pictures don't really show them at their best. They are also very calm as they are claimed to be,and it's not because they are sickly or stressed out.I got them on a Thursday and they ate a little on that Saturday, and by Monday they were eating like crazy.Only time will tell as to what their personalites and size will be.I am aware of what they could become as far as size and personality and am prepared to deal with it.I have to say that I really didn't appreciate the comment that "anyone who would buy these animals based on what Mitch says is an idiot".Granted, you are entitled to your opinion, but it may not be a bad idea to keep it to yourself unless you have facts to back all of that up.

Just my 2 cents
Alex

thats good to hear, ive aquired a few caimans in my teens, and now that i am old enough to have the money to house anoter i just sent out y payment for a diamond caiman. i see no harm in cross breeding as long as its done with some responsibility. you dont just go throwing anything together becuase you think it will create a great pet. but i dont think that is what mitch has done. he has obviously done his research and he has enough back ground in reptile breeding to were he can provide a safe place for two animals that normaly would get the chance to mate but he creates that chance. and at least its cutting down on the wild cuaghts that are for sale, if all that keeps up there wont be to many left and the laws will just get strictor. well ill quit talking, m out of here and im looking forward to reciving the hybrid diamond caiman.

That's great to hear that someone else is willing to take a chance on them.I'm SO tired of hearing them condemned by people who haven't even been around them, just basing their comments on sheer speculation.I'm completely happy with my "Diamonds".They
are great feeders and frequent handling doesn't seem to stress them out.Best of all they've never even attempted to bite.

Well the antecipation got to me, i went to a buddys house last night and he had hatched two cluthes of dwarfs about two week ago, the yolk sacks are gone and they are starting to feeding rather nicely. i couldnt resist so i bought on from him, i already had an enclosure built for the diamond when it arrives but the smooth front claimed it last night, so off the the hardware store i go, how big was your diamond when it arrived becuase i was thinking of using fiberglass resin t mold a nice large enclosure with a bank and some flat basking spots and andsland for the diamond but ive used this stuff for some live wells in boat and i know it has to cure for some time. i have a 125 gallon breeder which i a sure is big enough to house the little fellow in for a week or two, but i just wanted some others opinions becuase if need i can obtain a small tetra pond to house it in if needed. i dont think its gonna make much difference as long as the temps are right and the enviorment is well suited for it but i was just curious as to which som others would perfer for temp housing a small caiman.

I think that mine were 2-3 weeks old when I got them and are about 7-8" nose to tail.I'm keeping them in a 2'x4'x2' cage with the dry area even with the top of the tub the serves as their "pond" for now.that's just a 18"x24"x8" all purpose tub that I picked up at at Home Depot, and added some rocks for them to climb on to get to the land area or to bask on .The board that forms the land area overhangs the water by a couple of inches giving them an area to hide when they want.It seems like it will be enough for them for a while. If anything I'll put in a larger tub for them soon since I haven't seen them spend much time at all out of the water

Yes,

It's a great way to reduce wild caughts because we all know you can't breed two crocs of the same species in captivity.... !
