breeding season????

LoKii Mar 26, 2010 02:22 PM

Do cubans go into breeding season like green iguanas? What I mean is do the males do the the whole sperm plug thing and possibly a little color change?

yes they go thru breeding season. Their color does change a bit, usually in intensity from increased hormones, age and or temp. Increased head bobbing and less tolerance for you trespassing on their territory is common. Some get it worse than others.

Thats what I thought, Franks color has seem to get more vibrant, especially the pinkish/redish rust color on his chest and stomach. I thought he was just pissed at me lately, but it seems more then usual lately. Then I think I saw a sperm plug today and decided to ask about it on here. So how long does breeding season generally last for these guys?

Breeding season for cubans is around june and they lay around july in florida and seems to only vary a little around the country. I have only noticed female bahavior changes due to nest protection. If yours is acting up now it might just be from warmer waether and more lite?

I thought it actually started in May and went through June. Am I mistaken? I do find that starting around now and through the summer Kismet's colors are more intense (she is a Cuban/caymanesis/lewisi hybrid, but she has a lot of Cuban)but I think it is more to the fact that she gets more real sunlight starting this time of year rather than related to breeding.

Kismet's idea of nest protection, btw, was to crawl in my lap to lay her last egg last time... Mommy, protect my eggs! LOL Actually, since she knew they weren't fertile, she probably didn't care....

One good thing about Kismet. If she has to lay eggs she'll just lay them whereever she happens to be. She had a nice nest box, but didn't bother with it. At least that means she doesn't try to hold them in for the right spot....

Around June could include some of may but for mine first week of july is the time to lay and befor aug they are all laid. Rhinos lay about a month later the beginning of aug. If anyone has different experiences around the country please chim in it is good to know of variences.

Petra has layed eggs twice, First time in early August (in her food dish)..Second time in late August. (in a pile of bed sheets that we gave her because she enjoys digging in the sheets. it worked!)

We are in NY, she is a Rhino, and she like August.

Kismet laid eggs twice also. She laid July 27, 2006 and then July 27, 2008. So, I'm thinking that around that time this year I should expect eggs again.

Oh, she laid five on the ground, one in the water dish and one on my lap the last time.

Mine begin to breed in April and lay eggs in June-July like clockwork for many years. I live in extreme S. E. Florida about 10 miles from Key Largo, Florida.....I'm speaking of C. cornuta although a friend gave me his nice adult pair of Cuban's last year so we'll see if they do the same....

Tom your rhinos lay in june? that is the earlest I have ever heard of them laying. Even in key west I talked with a guy whos lay in aug.
I do find that individuals often lay the same week or even day of the year.

I have one female that ALWAYS lays the last week in June like clockwork [small one..6 eggs] and I have 2 females that for the last 2 years have laid eggs on the SAME day in the last week in July. Also they each lay 15 eggs.....

Hmm, funny you say that. My Cayman is very tame on the ground. Walks right to me etc... hates to be lifted though. Scratches etc...
To move him he walks right into a dog crate for food then I can take him where ever I need to. Works for him. Works for me.
