First sunglow litter of the year here...

treystowell Mar 26, 2010 03:50 PM

Thought I would share ... these lil' fellas arrived on Wednesday evening ... they are showing good contrast and color and is a poss super litter (SG x Dh SG pairing)... combo looks to have given the results I was shooting for (Color and contrast). Will be anxious to see them after a few sheds but the underlying pink washes in body and heads are already showing nicely, and all have nice bold tail patterns as well.

While I had heard of this I had never witnessed it personally until now (Brandon Weik had told me he had witnessed it several years ago with one of his females) ... there was one still born in the litter ... The second the mother flicked it with her tounge she picked it up and down the pipe it went!!!! I did not give her a chance to see if she would do the same with the slugs as I pulled her as soon as it was down the hatch (lol). The still born may just have been the nicest of the Dh's with a huge reverse stripe on the tail ;(

As always thanks for looking and hope everyone's season is going well!!!

Warm Regards to All,

Trey Stowell

Congrats on a great looking bunch of babies. Those Sunglows look like they will be stunners!

Also, very cool that you saw the female eat the baby. Great Pic too! Well, at least one person knows I'm not crazy now!

Love the Sunglows, very colorful and contrasty! That pic of Momma chowin down a baby is pretty damn cool also! Raw nature at it's finest! I didn't know they'd even consider that! Learn something new everyday!

They look hot! Big congrats.

Thanks for the great pics. I have never seen the mother eat a baby before. WOW

If those kids are as red as they look on my monitor, and I think they are, holy moly rocky! Those are unbelievable!

I have never heard of a Boa eating her still born young or slugs before. That is fantastic and I am sooooo glad you got good pictures of it to boot! Very cool! I know Rainbow Boas do that and so do Yellow Anacondas. That I have seen, but I have never seen a female Boa ever look remotely like she was even thinking about do that with a baby or a slug. Though one year I did have a female that I would have bet was going to have about 50 babies that only gave me about 12 babies and zero slugs. Could be she ate the mess. Thank you for posting that picture and story!

Awesome litter man.. Those are some crazy sunglows at 1 day old.. Wow.. Mother nature taking over, so amazing. Looks like that dead guy had a major kink in its spine near the tail.. It was for the better..

Thats awesome with some smokers in there!! I've seen a couple of my females eat some of their slugs before, but not their still born. I had one genetic striper in particular eat a good portion of her slugs 2 years in a row! I wish I had some pics of that. Congrats again and good pics!

treystowell Mar 27, 2010 03:58 PM

... for all the kind words. Greatly appreciated!

Wow Trey! Those are really some amazing animals. I saw a documentary on anacondas and saw her eat the slugs of her litter but I have never seen any factual proof until now that redtails will do the same. Congrats!

Congrats Trey, those are some spectacular looking kiddos right there, so bright, I gotta wear shades! The sunglows look RED, so rich and pretty!

And that picture of the mom.. FANTASTIC! That is the first I had heard of a boa doing that. I saved those pics, thanks so much for sharing!
