Herping finds today

Shadylady Mar 27, 2010 09:43 PM

I herped my property in N. Florida today. I have three acres, about half mixed hardwoods and a few pines, with a creek at the back. I found three scarlet kings, one southern ringneck, one earth snake (smooth or rough, I don't know), one injured baby grey rat, a tiger sally and a bunch of slimy sallys. I only photographed two of the SKs and none of the slimys. One is a teeny little thing and real pretty.

Enjoy!

That's a good size ringneck too! I don't see too many that big round here in Central Florida. I'm sure there here I just don't find them often.

Awesome! What was wrong with the rat?

shadylady Mar 28, 2010 08:28 PM

It has a pretty yucky looking injury to its tail at the vent area and another further down its tail. Don't know if he'll make it if he loses his tail at the vent. Anyway, I'm flushing it with weak iodine solution and he's in a clean box with two hides and water. We'll see. Cute little guy and I've been wanting to find a baby grey rat.

Awesome! Your sally is a marbled salamander (Ambystoma opacum). You must be on the panhandle as that is the southern most edge of their range.

Oh, yeah, marbled! Thanks! I'm not a sally person. This guy hangs out the same area. I've seen him before. Yes, I'm above Tallahassee right near the Georgia line.
