Sphagnum Moss

gaboonx Mar 28, 2010 08:07 PM

Trying to find Sphagnum Moss and thought why not ask here ,what retailer do you use? Local and or online? Typical costs?

Seems most online retailers want to charge you the same price for shipping as the cost of the item, except amazon.com

Thanks,

You should be able to find sphagnum moss in most garden centers of the big stores like WalMart, HomeDepot, Lowes, etc. Look for the unmilled spaghnum. It has a fair amount of sticks from the harvest process, but it should be all natural. I found a large bag years ago that I am still using LOL!! I use it in my nest boxes, but transfer eggs to vermiculite lined boxes after laying. I have hatched eggs before in sphagnum moss lined boxes, but prefer the vermiculite for some reason.

Jason like Kevin said you can find it in the garden center of large chain stores. I've started getting it in larger bulk from a large nursery/landscape center in my area. It's easier to get vermiculite, spagnum moss, pearlite and those type of things in large bulk for much cheaper from a specialty (nursery/lanscape)center.

Ditto what the others have said -- it's easy to find and inexpensive at virtually all garden supply centers.

My only additional recommendation is that you "bake" the dry moss in your oven (250 F for a half hour or so seems to work fine) and allow it to cool before using it in your collection. It's probably fairly clean out of the bag, but you never know. There's some evidence, even if much of it is anecdotal, that suggests mites and other parasites have been spread through the indiscriminate use of contaminated substrates. Maybe I'm just a clean freak, but I always bake my substrates and have yet to encounter a problem.
