I've been putting my 07 pair of leopard rats togerther for a day or so, then seperating them. Neither one has gone into post brumation shed yet and they've been out for a month or more. I have witnessed numorus breeding attempts, but no real copulation. The male intertwines himself around the female and tries like hell, but from what I've seen he doesn't extend either hemipenes. It's like he's just content to sit there all rapped up with her. Every now and then he seems to try and alighn their cloaca's, but no real copulation. Is this natural behavior? I witnessed kingsnakes copulating last year and corns in the past, but I'm still a little green when it comes to mating rituals. This will be the first attempt at breeding by both snakes and I'm affraid that the male isn't going to get the job done. Or maybe they have to gradually stimulate each other until copulation is acheived? Any first hand expierience with this species would be appreciated.
