So it is warming up here in central Oklahoma -- 60 yesterday and 80s this week -- and yesterday I was raking leaves out of a flower bed when I scraped some with the rake and uncovered a nice little Dekay's snake, who flipped over and looked somewhat startled. Picked him up and he very gently tried to bury his head into the space between my thumb and palm as if to say "Hey, I am not quite ready but it'll be warm soon!" Released him back into the larger bed with plenty of leaves. Snakes should begin to be on the move in these latitudes very soon . . . now if I can just get a return visit from the Texas rat snake who perched on my front window ledge last summer! I expect he has wintered under the shed out back. The long dry winter is over . . .
