Agalma - sex education needed

eksnek Mar 29, 2010 01:13 PM

Hey guys,

I have a pair of Agalmas (2005?). This weekend, i placed the pair together and it looks like the female is very interested. She is on top of him rubbing her tail against his, twitching, ...etc. The girl is making all the moves, but he just lay there and seemeed uninterested. This have been going on for 2 days and last night they finally separated. I am not sure if they actually "locked".

The male seem very healthy. Hasn't missed a meal since out of brumation, but not overfed either. What do you guys think?

Thanks,
Kenny

for real???? No offense, but it sounds like you are posting for a laff, or you have the sexes of your snakes mixed up for sure!! The males approach and court the females, who either just lay there for the most part, or run off if not receptive. Based on your post, its quite possible the pair copulated and you just didnt see it. Separate for a few days and introduce them again to be sure. If you are serious about what you witnessed, I would say your female is actually your male, and vice versa!!!

Yeah, I know times are different, and female's can be very forward these days about sex, but I wasn't aware that today's female snake's picked up on all this yet..LOL!

Nope. I am not kidding and i don't think i mixed up the sexes..lol. So the girls in the serpent world do never makes any move?

The male is much smaller and have no black cross over. The female is larger and has multiple black crossover banding. Whenever i check up on them, it is the larger snake, with black crossover that is doing all the work.

Now i never probed the pair since i got them. But i got it from a very reliable person.

I will separate and try again this weekend. If this happens again,i will try to grab a video for you guys.

Thanks.
Kenny

Maybe you female is not very attractive to the male. maybe she is just ugly to him and he needs a little help.

Based on your pictures you posted above it looks like you DO have the sexes correct.

I actually have a few reluctant males right now where the females are courting them. Its nothing unusual with males lacking in th testosterone debt *cough DMong* . What usually happens it the 'limp' male finally gets ontop.

When you have a large collection you tend to see everything. Tell em how it is Doug!

HA HA HA HA HA!

As guys we were only given enough blood to have one head function at a time. Guess that is why we think with the wrong one sometimes!LOL.

....my female SFMK grabs my male every time I first introduce them. I almost missed them this time...she had him by the head!
Anyway, I seperated them and he was TURNED ON! He ignored me totally (I still had the box open and my hands on her) and began to try to control her. Within about 15 sec. they were locked up and for hours.
Same story with that pair every year. You'd think I would get used to it but it makes me damn nervous!

She sounds like a real "sado-masochist"!

I would check in her little hide for a leather zipper mask, and whips and such too..LOL!

Well, after they have mated I am assuming they are separated. Then all you have to do is see which one lays eggs! LOL!

Sup Jerry, I was just wondering where you went

I never probed before, and i do not want to risk injuring them by trying. I have mostly hognose snakes and they can be sexed visually. I will wait for the eggs to confirm (can't fault me for wishful thinking..lol)

I have dealt with the guy i got this pair from a few times in the past...never given me a reason to not trust him. He always responded quickly to any questions i have. I can't say the same for all breeders i have purchased from in the past.

Thanks,
Kenny

I have actually witnessed this before with corn snakes! I just left them together and the female finally produced good eggs. I rarely ever see my snakes mating since till recently I have had mostly corns which I leave together year round. But almost every adult pair breeds fine. With milk snakes you may or may not wnat to leave them together that is for a different discussion.

Guys, i knew i wasn't going nuts. I just witnessed it again a few minutes ago. It is the female (as far as i know) that is trying to hhokup with the male.

I also took a quick video with my dslr camera. I have to get a prog to edit some of it and to resize so i can upload. I will let you guys know when it's up.

Regards,
Kenny

KevinM Mar 29, 2010 06:54 PM

Hey Kenny, once again, recheck the sexes. I have NEVER seen any of my female corns OR the few kings/milks I bred be the proactive party in breeding efforts. Its always been the male to initiate the response. Regardless, they are awesome looking animals you have there. Can you get some good tail shots from underneath of both to compare?

eksnek Mar 29, 2010 07:09 PM

I think you are correct with getting sexes/snakes mixed up. It is the only logical reasoning. I will get some pics by tomorrow. I used up all the battery left on my cam taking the vids. I just uploaded one of them. Its not really that great. Please forgive me. It's the first video i ever took with my canon dslr. Still learning how to use it......

Thanks,
Kenny

Looks like the male on top performing typical undulating movement to me!
