African house snake question

Nicodemus Sep 21, 2003 03:26 PM

Ok, so I'm reading conflicting information about house snake hatchlings.
These guys are like about the thickness of a pencil (if not less) and I read they can eat a pinkie after their first shed. yet this seems impossible despite the ability to dislocate the jaw.

However I also read they shouldn't be fed anything that will stretch them too much (so the scales are stretched apart).

So which is it? If they shouldn't have whole pinkies, should someone use tails and legs and such?

I have had no problem feeding house snakes pinkies. I started mine off on day old pinkies.

I have bred several different lines of house snakes over the years and there is tremendous variation in the size of the offspring. Some babies are as big around as a pencil, but most are only 1/3 that diameter.

Even the smallest babies can choke down a newborn pinkie. Pinkies more than 24 hours old are too big for the smallest babies.
