Juvenile Beardie Won't Eat...

blaff1990 Mar 29, 2010 06:01 PM

I just got him a few days ago from someone who didn't want him anymore. He's only about 7 months old. When I got him, he was in an enclosure with sand as the substrate and it was only 10 gallons. The day I got him I moved him into a 10 gallon with paper towels. Yesterday, I moved him into a 55 gallon with paper towels to give him some more room because he's way too big for the 10 gallon.

He was eating fine the past few days, but today, I tried to feed him some apple pieces and bearded dragon diet (the instant vegetables one) and he ignored it (he usually eats the fruit right away). He also ignored the calcium-fortified crickets I tried to feed him, when usually he goes right for 20 or so at a time. Any ideas why he might have stopped eating? I know juveniles are supposed to be hungry every day. He has a constant water supply in a little water bowl, and he usually sits in it, but he wasn't. I've been giving him a warm bath every other day since I got him, and the temperature of the warm side of the tank has been at 95 degrees F. I have a few things for him to hide under, some things for him to climb on and in. What could be the cause of him not eating? I cleaned the tank really well with terrarium cleaner before I put him into it.

Why would he have stopped eating? Please help...

Sometimes just being put in a new environment will cause enough stress to put him off his food for a few days...sometimes even longer. It's all new and strange to him...give him some time to adjust. Your basking spot should be around 105-110 degrees,95 is not quite hot enough, but that's probably not the immediate problem, and again,it is normal for some stress to occur with a new cage. Just thought I'd mention, apples aren't that great for beardies, you should be feeding greens such as turnip,mustard,collard,dandelion....all high in calcium, vitamins minerals.By the way,how big is he at 7 months and what type [ brand] and wattage lights are you using ?
