Well I took a couple of quick pics of the 2 baby litter from earlier this morning.....I am a bit confused to say the least.
I bred to red farm bred nicaraguans and she had 7 slugs and 2 babies......
One that appears to be a blood and another that looks like a type II anery! What are the odds of two farm bred animals bought a couple years apart being het for type II anery and Blood, not to mention the odds with 7 slugs and only 2 babies and hitting on both.....Weird!
Sorry the pics are not all that great, I will get some better ones a little later.....

I decided I had to take a couple more pictures now that I calmed down a little bit...lol
I also took a couple of pics of the parents. Both of the parents are "Farmed" Nicaraguans, which makes this really strange to me.....I don't believe I have ever heard of anyone having "pure" nicaraguan Bloods. I believe Jon Berrys' "Berry Bloods" are at least 50% Nicaraguan...

Hey Bob,

Thats very cool, congrats on the babies ... really pity the rest didn't make it!

The dame looks very similar to my female dame who turned out to be het Blood. Baby bloods do look light pink when born (before they shed), although your one looks very light. Once they shed you will have a better idea of what he/she really looks like.

Whats the history on the parents? I've had farmed Nics turn out het Anery, but both Anery and Blood together is very "lucky", just like some of the St.Pierre line.

cheers, John

Thanks John,
I have also seen a few farmed nics as het anery, but It seems to be a 1 in a million or more to have paired two animals that were both farmed and acquired at least a year apart to both be dh pewter....
Oh well I guess time will tell. I need to get them shed and fed and see how they progress. The idea of having a "Pure" Nicaraguan blood boa is pretty cool, as I have always loved these little boas and have been waiting for something like this to eventually happen....
Thanks again

I think it may be an anery and a pewter. What do the bellies of the two adults look like?

Thanks Bill,
I was hoping you would weigh in. I know the female has a red speckled belly. If I remember correctly the males belly is also red and speckled. Ill try and post some pics.
PS
I really wish I could have gathered the $$ to get your Pewter from you!
Thanks again

All of my hets for blood have a good amount of red on their bellies. Some of the hogg cross hets have bellies almost as red as the bloods. I think your female in particular looks like a het and almost like a blood. It looks like you may already have a pewter.
Congratulations.

I appreciate your opinion and input.

I agree with Bill, that female looks alot like other adult bloods I have seen out there. I bet if you do the same breeding next year and get better numbers, you end up with a few more Pewters and a couple of "normal" bloods. Or, breed a male blood to her and you'll know for sure. From my limited experience producing blood boas, they are very variable but there is no doubt when they are born whos a blood and who isnt. For me, the black eyes and pink wash on your baby give it away for sure. Cool stuff though. Take care and good luck with them. Mike Panichi

Thanks Mike,
I was hoping you would comment...I am thinking about breeding my motley dh pewter to the female. It would probably be better to use a blood to make sure though. I was just surprised that the anery showed up, especially since the parents were farm bred and purchased from different sources and almost a year apart....Crazy odds, I guess.

I've never seen a new born CA pewter, so maybe thats why it looks so light ... again very awesome litter Bob !!

Not wanting to steal any of Bob's thunder here but does anyone have a pic of a baby pewter to compare?

cheers, John

Thanks John,
I have been looking for some more baby pewter pics. I have seen a few.
It seems this blood/pewter is kind of strange. It seems to be in between blood and pewter if that makes sense...lol.
I suppose it will all make more sense when they shed, by the way both babies are females....
I guess I can't complain, id rather have gotten a male, but 2 healthy little girls is just fine with me!

Well that's awesome Bob!

I always wondered what that red female was going to do for you....I always thought she was special.

robertmcphee Mar 31, 2010 08:28 AM

Thanks Amie,

How cool for those of us who love the Nics, to have a "pure" nicaraguan blood!
I know you have commented on her over the years, you and I both thought something was cool with her. Now the male, I never really thought much about him except possibly being some sort of hypo....
Thanks again

That's a line of bloods I'd invest in!

If only I could get that lucky in my breedings...I'm so jealous!
