Finding common kingsnakes in KS

calebjg Mar 30, 2010 12:25 PM

I have a bit of a list of snakes I would love to come across in the wild. The common kingsnake, the bull/gopher snake and a milksnake. All of these should be in my area somewhere in Central KS.Any suggestions as to when(mnth and time of day) and where(specific locations they might hang out)?????
so far last year I found these.Common garters, plains garters, lined snakes, ringnecks(vast quantities) and an emorys ratsnake(very cool) as well as alot of different unidentified watersnakes.Oh and one small copperhead.

I'm with you on kings...I can't find 'em in the field. And my parent's find speckleds in their yard, lucky people... Bulls/gophers I've found most often (here in Amarillo) morning/early afternoon in the mid-high 70s. They seem to be generalist. I've found 'em in prairie, on rock, in cactus patches, in a tree once (who says they don't climb), on the road, in parking lots...one got inside a retail store I worked at, winning the award for most surprising find ever. I've found 'em in city parks, rocky slopes...yeah, pretty much any habitat we have locally.

Should be pretty easy, just find an east-west dirt road and find a rock cut, go to the north bank and start flipping rocks.

I hunt central kansas quite a lot and find all 3 on a regular basis and all in similar habitat. Time of the day doesnt seem to play to much into it ive found a lot in the morning and in the afternoon. I drive backroads looking for south and west facing rock cuts, outcroppings, and rocky hillsides. Depending on temps and rain as to wether high up or down low on hill is better but i flip any and all rock small to very large. Also rocky dry creek beds and gullies are good. Old farmsteds and junk pyles with carpet, wood, and tin can be real good. As far as temp goes usually middle to end of april when its consistently 50 nightime low and 70 daytime high into the end of may when temps are 60/80 is best time temp. Hope this helps keep us posted on your finds and maybee we'll cross paths on the backroads.
