Interesting development in female rainbows

AshleyM Sep 21, 2003 03:54 PM

I was wondering if someone could help me out with some info - this is the most helpful forum on Kingsnake, IMO! I was handling my two female BRBs yesterday, and noticed that both of the girls have a distinctly pink/coral tint to their bellies - before, their bellies were solid ivory. I examined them closely and am assured that it's not any kind of burn or injury (there's nothing in their cage that they could hurt themselves on anyway) - they're just pink! I took my male out, but he looks completely normal. I was hoping to breed these two girls this coming winter (they have both put on enough weight and length, and are in great shape) - could this have anything to do with the cooling weather here? Could this be a good or bad sign for my breeding prospects this season? Thanks so much...

Ashley,
. When mine get pink bellies they usually shed within 10 days. I am not sure why this shows up occasionally. I had initially thought that it was related to substrate that was acidic from urine but it happens sometimes with perfectly clean cages. And it does seem to occur much more in the females.

Thanks for the info, both of you - I have had these girls for a while, but had never noticed it before. Guess it's just because I try to avoid handling when they look opaque or are starting to go opaque. Thanks again!
