New Boa Suggestions?

KevinM Mar 30, 2010 12:54 PM

I am looking at getting a boa for my daughter who wants something with a bit more heft than a cornsnake, but not a ball python. I see several CA and insular forms like nics, panamas, etc. as well as hoggs. Any advice? It will definitely be a male. Looking for something around five foot MAX, and has a good temperament. Also something less than $150-200. I am a colubrid guy and am trying to talk her into eastern king morphs LOL!!

Thanks
KevinM

Kevin,

I would suggest buying a captive bred colombian male, not too big and they will make a great pet. Central americans can be a bit more fiesty than colombians.

which usually runs $40-$50, I'll send you a nice Colombian normal male free of charge. Just as long as you can send me something in writing stating that you will always accompany your daughter when handling the animal.

I think it's great when we as parents share this hobby with our kids. If I can help, I'd be honored.

That is super wonderful of Jason to offer the boa for only shipping. A Colombian male would make a great pet and they can be very docile and gentle. With any constrictor, adult supervision is a good thing. Bill

Jason, that an awesome offer!! I do like the colombians, and have some experience with them. I keep and breed colubrids, mainly corns. My daughter somewhat shares the love with me, but I am a bit concerned with this special snake request. I can handle getting her a corn or other colubrid and her loosing interest. No issues with me keeping them. She is currently keeping two rats, two bearded dragons, and two dogs LOL!! She is 13 and my wife and I help with her collection a bit. Me with the herps, mom with the dogs. I have two male corns she likes and handles fairly regularly. Still, I do all the snake feedings and help with feeding her bearded dragons. I dont want to end up with a boid I am not into LOL!! Let me quizz her a bit more and see what she decides at an upcoming herp show weekend after Easter. I REALLY want to be sure she understands the aspect of acquiring and caring for a snake like a BCI.

What she thinks her life will look like when she's in her 30's. See if she mentions this boa being around. What about her 40's...?

Properly cared for boas can and do live for a LONG time...

But it's ok when they look like this:

Good luck!

Oh yeah, this is a BIG commitment. I am "that Dad" that is very animal and reptile tolerant as long as care and commitment is shown. Other than a super sized boid like a retic or burmese, or a huge lizard like a monitor, I am pretty open as long as she is willing to put the time and effort into the "dream" snake. Its been several days since she's handled any of the corns, and I had to remind her to feed the bearded dragons last night LOL!! I know I wasnt the best as a kid keeping my charges up to snuff either, and I dont want to squash the love. Still, its a commitment not to be taken lightly. Thats a great idea for questions to ask her!!
