Tegu questions?

Gollum Sep 21, 2003 04:09 PM

Does anyone think its a good addition to a tegu's diet? Alsohow big should my red tegu be? I got him on March 3 2003, and he is currently measuring 15 inches. He is being fed a diet consisting of mainly crickets, ground meat (turkey, beef) and fruits (grapes, melon, strawberries, and rasberries) whenever he takes them. Thanks in advance.

What kind of fish? Cook? etc..

cooked, or live guppies or goldfish. Either.

Whole frozen fish seem to be a popular choice for some people I know who keep crocodillians. Small river and ocean fish have been recommended, but I'm unaware of anyone using them for Tegus.
Goldfish are to be avoided due to the conditions they are kept in at most pet stores.
Of course whole rodent and insect prey are always good choices along with the fruits you have mentioned. Of course I am not personally a big fan of the "variety" is better idea, nor am I convinced of the value of things like the SDZ diet either.
But it never hurts to experiment.

You might want to consider that a live fish might have live parasites right? The parasites might get passed to your reptile (I don't know if that's true). That's why I stopped feeding mine live fish. I would think cooking or freezing would kill the parasites (but honestly I don't know). I am a fan of variety so I say if you want to feed cooked fish go for it! I feed stuff like cooked salmon to my tegus.
