Possible Hibernation?

lizardfan81 Mar 31, 2010 10:25 AM

Hi Everyone,

I have an adult albino pine (Stacey) for about a year now. She was always a great eater and a very friendly snake. Shes in a 55 Gal breeder which she has also lived in, temps are all normal and have no changed since I had her. She also has a nice big water dish for drinking and vines over the tank for hiding.

She has always been a shy eater, I put her in a rubbermaid for an hour or so. This has always worked and was also the way her breeder use to feed her. She eats one adult mouse, sometimes two (I dont always offer her two).

She has not eaten for over a month now and has shown no signs of going into a shed. She just hides in her favorite spoke in the tank. I just see her once in a blue moon to get a sip of water. I took her out to inspect her and she seems personality wise the same. She will just not eat. I attempted twice with no success and left her in the rubbermaid for much longer than usual. She hasnt been roaming her tank like she usually does as well.

Is it possible she went into hibernation?

Do pine snakes have a rep for this?

Thanks,

1 Pine
1 BP
1 Milk/Corn hybrid

Snakes will turn off now and then for no apparent reason. Have the temps remained about the same? When my pines go off they're still very active but my experience is limited. If she's been eating well before, a month is nothing. If she goes more than a couple months (note the date of her last meal) you might try a diet change up or better yet, offer live to get her interestd. If that works she'll probably start taking f/t and if shed refuses the f/t, follow a live with an f/t.

My young but big male just went back on after more than 90 days! Most of that was probably mate hunting and curiously, he has been much less active recently, which in his case suggested he might take...and he did!

So, don't worry to much yet. Just make sure all that she's looking healthy, is lively not languid, and all the basic husbandry is right.

Thanks for the info.

Good news, she was watching me feed my corn last night so I gave it another go and we had a success.

Its good to know they can go into a down time though, I know my BP likes to stress me like that once in a blue moon too.

Good news. Always important to follow-up on issues I think.
