Quick update on 2 boas (male?/female?)

AbsoluteApril Mar 31, 2010 10:52 AM

Not sure if anyone remembers but I had posted pics back in Jan '09 of two boas I had bought as females but was questioning their sex.

Both Vegas and Cinnamon were brought up slow, like all my boas, but they never got big, only around 5.5' at 8 yrs old and not much thicker than a red bull can. I fed them quite heavily this last year but they didn't get much bigger, just wider (Vegas started to look like a BP! lol). My probing came up male for both. I figured the only way to know for sure... is to try to breed them.

I put Alpine, the '03 albino from my very first litter, in with Vegas, the lateral striped normal. Let me clarify, I always put my boas into a tub together before introducing them both into the enclosure... Alpine was courting her within 10 min. IN the tub! I couldn't believe it. Vegas is deff. a girl and curretly gravid (I hope with lil baby boas!). Her POS was 2/5/10 and due date is 5/21/10.

here was one of the pics I had posted trying to show the bulge after the vent that made me think she was a male

One down!

Then I put Kirk, an '08 red group jungle male from Matt Crabe, in with Cinnamon, a salmon. Nothing. I tried them together a few times with no action. (Cinn also kept pacing the tank like my other males do during breeding season). Shoot... so maybe Cinn is a male. I didn't have any other females ready that I could put Cinn on... so I figured I'd have to wait until next year to try that. Then last night, I thought.. hmmm let's try Alpine in there, that boy is a breeding machine. Went to bed at 11:30 and they were just checking each other out. Woke up this morning at 6am and he was courting her like crazy! I removed Alpine right away (he wasn't too happy!) and didn't think of taking a pic until I was on my way to work. Oh well. I sure hope he isn't so prolific that he'll just breed ANYTHING, I'm taking this as a sign that Cinnamon is in fact female.

So yay!! Looks like I do in fact have two females! I don't have any males to put with Cinnamon this year so I'll probably just let her be until next season. Here's a pic of Cinnamon's 'maleish' spur, picture was taken by Dave Colling:

I ramble a lot, don't I? Thanks for reading if you made it this far. I hope everyone has a terrific season!

April I definitely remember this subject, but I forget what I said,
I don't remember if I said male or fem.

Congrats on some nice breeding results hopefully she'll
throw some nice healthy babies

I'm almost positive you had called correctly 'female' on Vegas, can't remember about the other one though.

I should have saved what the responses were! I remember most people did think Vegas was a girl but were split about 50/50 on Cinnamon.

That’s great news that Vegas proved to be a female.

On the other hand tho, just because you had another male court with cinnamon, doesn't necessarily rule out the fact it can still be a male, I had a Suri that was suppose to be a female, and a few years back I had a male in with her and he could court her like crazy non stop for months but nothing ever came out of it, well even seeing this she had spurs similar to yours. Unfortunately I just recently lost my Suri, and since i had my doubts about the sex when my vet did the necropsy indeed she was really a HE, but was submissive with the other smaller male that he was in with several years ago.

With that story I hope for you I’m wrong but i still think cinnamon is a male.

Good luck
