Very, very off topic: Living with Tigers

kristinL568 Sep 21, 2003 04:15 PM

Living with Tigers si a really great program that's on the Discovery Channel right now. It's about these 2 zoo born tiger cubs that are tuaght to survive in the wild on a big gated reserve on the plains of Africa. It's really interesting. has absolutely nothing to do with collared lizards but we're all animal lovers here anyway. = ) Kristin

I saw that program last Sunday, I watched it twice! Very very good show, even better idea. The only thing I wonder about is the fact that they are siblings. But they must have considered that before starting the program. It was a great show though.

They said that they weren't going to breed them. That really was a good show. It was really funny when they were running those antelopes on wires. Kristin

I would hope not! But in order to breed either of them, they will have to do the same "adjustment" period with more tigers which will not be as easy with two tigers already in the park. It makes more sense to me to introduce two unrelated animals so that breeding can occur more rapidly. Just my opinion.

They mentioned something about that in the show. I think they are going to artificially inseminate(sp?) her with another males semen. I think the whole project is going to involve controlled breedings to ensure genetic diversity.

I forgot that they talked about AIing her. I wonder how successful AI is in a big cat? That would be very interesting research!

YES! I have watched it beginning to end 3 x so far. One of the coolest wildlife documentaries I have seen ever! I have seen many, when I was a youngin I would choose watching Wild America over cartoons. Anyway, it was a great story that I am interested in seeing where it goes. What I would do to get up close and personal with a big cat...lol.
