Dragon Not Eating!!!!

2nd2nonedragons Apr 01, 2010 12:06 PM

Hi, I have a male dragon who has gone a month with out eating, he has been in this condition since I brought him out of brumation. Here and there I force feed him some superworms, but I want to know is there something else that I could or should do.

It would be helpful if you have his weight,set-up and age listed. How long in brumation ? Any other symptoms ? Possible resp. infection? Labored breathing ? What was pre-brumation weight ? If you don't know it,was he healthy, stocky,a good eater ? Could be parasites...also,has he been drinking ? Some dehydrated animals don't eat....give him a short soak in lukewarm water [ 5-10 min.] to see if he'll drink. Dry off immediately and put under basking bulb. See how he breathes.A trip to the vet soon if no improvement.Hope he comes around. If you can, post a pic of him. Someone on this forum may have other helpful advice.

I kept him in brumation for 6 weeks, I did not weight him before I but him in to brumation, but I know for sure I had him hydrated and kept him on greens and hornworms for a month straight. He doesnt seem to have breathing problems, but I think I will take him to the vet if nothing changes by next Friday.
Thanks for responding!!

Can you post a picture? Is he lethargic, not basking ? He may still want to brumate because 6 weeks is a very short time. Most of mine sleep for 3-4 months. Si he may be groggy...especially if you " brought him out" It may have been too soon. Good that he doesn't have breathing problems. If he is not underweight,I would not force-feed. He could easily choke.

I am not an expert.
My female was not eating for a few weeks after Brumation.
She would sip a little water but not much, after I gave her a daily bath for 5 days, she then lopped up as much water as I would give her, and then BOOM back onto eating.

*For the experts, I have a scale and she lost a total of 45 grams in 3 months of brumation and the following 3 weeks. was 655 now 615 and gaining again.

I would double up any hydration regiment you have with yours and see if that helps.

When you soak him go with half water and half pedialyte...a vet told me about this because i have one that was just treated for cocccidia with albon and albon is very dehydrating.... did you get the temps up before you started feeding him again?

Albon has the potential to cause Yellow Fungus Disease in Bearded Dragons so you should always use a probiotic immediately after treatment. I would recommend Acidophiliz by Pet Authority.
