Help popping a ball

drasticplastic Apr 01, 2010 04:42 PM

Ok, so I've seen the videos and read what I could online. I haven't had anyone show me in person how to do this, so at this point it's trial and error. I tried popping my 7 month old pied who was sold to me as a male. When I tried this, there were two little bumps where the hemipenes should be, I didn't see the actual hemipenes stick out, just the two little bumps. I want to know, am I not applying enough pressure? Am I in the wrong spot? Didn't roll far enough? I know it's hard without pictures but I would appreciate whatever you guys could tell me. Thanks in advance.

If you are unsure of what you are doing STOP. Try to find a local breeder / dealer or someone with more experience to show you how to properly sex the snakes. You can cause serious damage to the animal if you are not properly doing it.

I understand where you are coming from, and that's the last thing I want to do is harm any snakes by my own lack of knowledge. I do not feel that I applied enough pressure to hurt him and I stopped before anything negative happened. I've been more of a boa guy these last few years and I am wanting to get into ball pythons so I'm just learning the ropes. Thanks for your input.

Darren.

What damage is done? Can you point to some science to back this claim?

I here/read this all the time. For the life of me I cannot understand from where this information started. Over 25 years of popping snakes and never heard of a snake damaged in this way. Believe me, 25 years ago I was not so good!

You should have someone who knows show you in person, but I would be your not using enough pressure that was my problem before I knew how, not only the hand doing the rolling but the other one under the vent and at the vent has to have decent pressure too.
