Newbie to Gold Dust gecko...help/advice

Zach_MexMilk Sep 21, 2003 04:59 PM

HI all, My name is Zach and I am mostly a snake person, with a Bearded Dragon. I am about to recieve a Gold Dust Day Gecko and I was wondering about my setup. Here it is:

10 gallon tank w/ screen cover w/plastic wrap half of cover to retain humdity

coco-soil bedding with orchid bark cover

corkbark hide areas (vertical and on the floor)

live photos plant (with all leaves wipped clean, etc)

I am concern about lighting. I will have a tube light that will emit light and heat, but i am most confused about UV requirements. My Bearded DRagon doesnt have any UV bulbs, buthe goes out almost daily for a few hours and has his food dusted with calcium and uv3 powder. If i dust of gecko's food with the same powder (Repti-cal uv3) will a bulb be required? I wont dust too much, maybe twice a week.

How does it sound? I plan to mist daily to keep a high humidty.
thanks-Zach

Ive heard no matter what it is always better to provide uv lighting. You might want to check out the book by sean mckeown titled The Care And Mantenance Of Day Geckos. It is a great book and is very informative with lots of pics and illustrations.

UVB is pretty much a must for day geckos. Anything thats dayirnal benefits from UV if not requires it. I even provide UV for my tokays and most say they dont need it. From what I've noticed, the night after feeding my tokays will sleep near the UV light during the day....I would strongly recommend it for day geckos.

The book that Leapin Lizards just put out addersses the question of, to UV, or not to UV and kicks the debate in to the next level. As to Tokays sleeping next to the floresent fixture, mine do the same thing except behind it/on top, nicely shielded from any UV. They like the heat. Good luck with the Dusties they're neat. My first egg just hatched.
