Thinking of breeding my corn, few questions?

jack7777766 Sep 21, 2003 05:03 PM

Hey Guys,
Ive never bred snakes before so all of my knowledge is from books, posts and people.
Anyways Id like to breed my adult corn which I still need to sex, I was thining of sexing it and buying an adult of the other sex soon. However at one herp show I went too, I was told that even if I put an adult pair together I still have to brumate them for them to breed. But I also read that with cornsnakes you can just put them together and theyll breed right away! So I was just wondering if I acquired a mate for mine and put them together, would they breed right away???
Or would they do nothing until I cool them???
Or basically will they breed anytime theire introduced???

Thanks
Jack

Get the Corn Snake Manual. It is a really great guide especially if you plan to breed your snakes. Brumation is not needed to induce breeding. Some corns will breed as soon as you put them together and allow you to watch but others want privacy and others may not breed at all for you for many reasons. If you do not brumate and do not house the adults together you need to watch closely for ovulation. or just put them together every few days in spring(march-july)I have also heard that not brumating can cause lower fetility rates but i don't know for sure if this is true as i brumated my corns before breeding. Also some males and females will seem to reject partners nop matter when or how they are introduced. with males take him out then reintroduce a few days later, put him immeadiatley w/ another female, or wait till next year. with females try another male or wait until next year.Hope i helped a little

Thanks,
I actually have the book and I just went over it, its been awhile LOL.
I got that they will naturally reproduce around spring but that to get them o reproduce at other seasons you have to trick them use cooling and photoperiod cycles to make them think its spring.
So basically if I wanted them to breed sooner (before spring) Id have to cycle them, right??

You are right; to get breeding before spring you'd need to start right away. However, even starting right now you wouldn't get breeding til around February or March. And if the male's sperm is no good (always a possiblility in a long term captive adult), then the best you'd get is slugs in '04.

IOW, expect this to be a two year project. Then if you don't get babies in '04 you will not be discouraged. And if you do get babies in '04, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Herpers need glacial patience.
