Your biggest bairdi?

Astourna Apr 04, 2010 06:06 PM

I know a few of the members on this forum have a love for these snakes. So I'm curious to know what potential they have size wise. I know just like with other rat snakes it's variable and depends on feeding, yada yada, but it's a good excuse for showing off!

Post how large your biggest bairdi is, their weight if you want, and a photo with something for comparison would be great.

Thanks :D

I like the request and hope to see some impressive stuff. My male is just over 66 inches and 1500 grams (~3 1/3 lbs.) right now at about 21 months. He's very stout but has slowed down a bit now. He also was on a long fast a while back. Hoping he'll get to 6 feet in another 6 months. ...because size matters!

The more I see them, the more I love them. I can't wait for mine to be that size. Are a lot of your larger ones males? I think colubrids don't like to follow the 'rule' that male snakes are always tiny like boas and pythons do. (Of course there are always exceptions.)

Some say that because females invest in reproductive development that they don't grow as large but I don't know if that includes those which are never gravid. On the other hand, male snakes tend start mate hunting in the spring and oftern go off feed. I know that's true for some of my males (which means I will avoid them from now on).

That is a good question that I've never heard answered consistently or satisfactorily so I look forward to some accounts from more experienced keepers.
