argos_mom Apr 05, 2010 04:56 PM

my female beardie just laid her firs clutch of about 14. shes not skiny so i dont think shes done but all the eggs turned a yellow color, almost clear. we had no idea she was pregnant. She was in a tank with another supposed female...i guess she is a he but any ideas why this would happen? were still keeping them warm just in case

They can still cycle and lay eggs even not being with a male. If the other dragon is a male its possible they were fertile, but they don't sound good having turned yellow. I would figure out if the other is a male or female first, and figure out a housing arrangement for them if you don't want the female to be bred if the other dragon turns out to be a male.

You didn't specify how old she is. Is she under 18 months old? The eggs may not be fertilized.

Bearded dragons can lay infertile eggs whether they have been with a male or even seen one. So its still possible the other dragon you have her in with, is still a female. However it certainly doesn't hurt to check her again to make sure.

If you lay her on a flat surface or your hand, facing away from you, lift her tail upwards to about a 90% angle. Look on the tail side of the vent for a bump. If you see a single central bump then she's a female, if there is a indentation or two bumps its a male.

Below is a link to pictures to make it easier to see what I mean for sexing:

k thanks. DO females turn black and puff up thier beard? I tried sexing them the way it says several times. but they never stay still long enough I can never tell either way. The female is at least 2 years cuz thats how long we had her. i knew iguanas laid eggs sometimes for no reason.

Yes females extend their beards and blacken them like males. Most males beards are black from the tip down onto their chests. Females generally turn black a little bit from the tip and not much past the beard. Males get blacker and over a larger area.

ok, well the beard of the possible male is showing signs of being black and he turns black all over sometimes, especially when we had the female in there. Im thinking maybe its one of those dud lays and the supposed male isnt a male or isnt old enough. i know ive had him over a year but it hasnt been too. the female is a lot bigger but he would sit on her and not let her move too much...showing dominance and when i would open the lid and she would try to jump out he would tackle her back down. sometimes they would sit like that for days, moving only to get food and water and sometimes they wou;d be at opposite ends of the tank like they were fighting

With that much dominance being displayed by one, I suggest housing them separately.

You can also take a picture of the dragon darkening her beard and post it here for us to see.

they are separate now. the female is my brothers and he had to go out of town for a while so i was lizard sitting...plus it was mating season...But "he" was darkening "his" whole body more then the beard..the beard is mostly for my iguana who is across the room...they "talk" all day but the black body was for the female. so idk..i never herd of 2 females being agressive..and it was funny that the smaller one was dominating the much larger one. oh well if mine will ever sit still long enough ill try to sex "him" i never see anything, bulge or bulges...my iguana is different...i clearly see 2 bulges..
