Spent last week in Helena. Didn't see much with the wild swings in temps(75 to snow and back); a few Rana and garters. I did find about thirty of these little guys in about ten minutes along the shore of a lake up by Rimini.

That is one huge nickel. I think I may go out amphib shooting too. Been raining here quite a bit. Frogs/Toads everywhere. I'm gonna hit the hill country and try to find a barking Tree Frog Tues. I think. I just feel like shooting some pictures...JP

good luck, I don't think you need luck, just show up
My Dad says he's seen more herps around Kerrville in the last two years than in all the time he has lived there since 87'. What's your take on that?

Dunno,..we've been flooded pretty good for the last two years so the food supply for the snakes maybe better than usual. Last years flood was of biblical proportions in and around San Antonio/Hill Country. I saw more frogs, mice and grasshoppers last spring than I've ever seen. Just a theory on my part, but who knows.
All this being said, last year was my worst snake hunting year on record. I shoulda went to Kerrville, I guess. I'm off work tomarrow so if the wife will let me, I'll go out and do some lookin..

Ambystoma macrodactylum, I spent the past May and June in Montana, found lots of eggs of these guys, but didn't see too many adults. Nice photo!
I've found that either you can find adults at the very beginning of the breeding season along the banks, or you can find the newly morphed young at the end of the season along the banks. In between is a crap shoot.
