Safe Communal Housing Size

KevinM Apr 07, 2010 11:28 AM

I have a juvie female dragon approximately five months old and a large adult female dragon approximately two years old. The juvie is about four to five inches snout to vent with a head about 1 inche wide. The adult is about six to seven inches snout to vent with a head about 2 to 2.5 inches wide. The game plan is to house both females in the adult females four x two x two foot cage eventually. Other than territorial issues that may arise and cause separation due to aggression, when will the large adult not perceive the juvie as potential food. I dont want to come home and find the juvie halfway stuffed down the adults throat or chewed up from a feeding attempt!!

Thanks!

There is no "sure " safe size or method. Many females will house together peacefully. BUT,much to the chagrin of some owners, you may get a territorial girl that constantly harasses. Some females will even act out full-blown "male" behavior and attempt to breed. If you try the experiment,be around to see how they react. The closer in size, the better. There is no general rule.

Right off the bat the cage you want to put two dragons in is too small. 4'x2'x2 is the minimal size for a single adult dragon. If you want to house two dragons together you need a cage that is bigger than this, at least 5'x2'x2'.

Second, there is no sure way to guarantee dragons will get along, even females. If you really want to house both dragons together, I suggest making or buying a larger cage than what you have now, at least 5'x2' in floor space, even 5'x3' would be better. The height can be between 18"-24" as well. This way, if the two females don't get along you can move one into the smaller 4'x2'x2' cage and both can be housed comfortably.
