WTF are funny.

alebron Sep 21, 2003 06:25 PM

MY WTF always does the same thing every night. First he climbs up this branch, if he sees food he'll catch and eat as much as he wants, and climbs up the branch again in the exact position that he does every night. He then jumps into his bowl of water and sits their as long as he wants, and excretes waste. Once i went to sleep at 11 o' clock he was in his bowl, i woke up for school at 5:15 and he was still in his bowl in the exact position. Then he goes to sleep and buries under the 3inches of coconut bark in the exact same spot every day. He has been doing this since I put him in his 3o gallon tank, and he always hangs out in the left side of tank.

it isnt a good idea to let your WTF "eat as nuch as he wants". You should feed a growing frog 2-3 Crickets a day and full grown 2 every other or every 3rd day.

Have you ever thot of gettign your frog a friend? a 30 gallon tank is large enough to acomidate 2!!!!

also, if uses the bathroom in his bowl, change the water ASAP. the bacteria could get him sick.

whats you r frog's name... not that it matters or anything, but i was just curious.

Mine's name is Skippy.

My tree frog is named frodo from the lord of the rings. I feed him at night 3 times a week at 4-6 crickets per serving. Frodo is 3 inches long, and is chubby like most WTF, but he is still way far away from being obese. I sprinkle calcium on his crickets. When I'm out of food, I feed him pesticide free, and parisite free insects from outside. This includes field crickets, tree crickets, male katydids (which he loves), and moths so he has to actually chase and jump to catch his prey (this is fun to watch). Also don't worry I change the water every day if it has solid waste, and every other day if it has pee to prevent the buildup of ammonia.
Also is it normal for white tree frogs to bury themselves, the tank is not cold, he just uses it for cover when he sleeps.

Mine sleeps in the corner. I have not heard of them burrowing, but it is possible that they will do it.

Mine doesnt burrow, but he really lodges himself under one of the viney sticks i have... Mine seem to be very ritualistic when it comes to sleeping... one is always under the stick, on is always in the top corner, and one is either next tot he one under the stick or next to the one in the corner

burrowing is not a normal behaviour. he is either burrowing because he is looking for heat, or he is trying to escape heat. he could also be sick. what are the temps, humidity etc of you tank???

The humidity is usually around 50-60. I don't have a thermometer, but i'lll guess the tempature it around 75 degrees. I don't think there is a problem because he is eating healthy, and is active (when insects are in the tank). He usually bury himself during the day, but he has been burying himself since I got him. Their are plenty of places he can hide but he always choses the corner. I don't think he sick because he is bright green. I read also in the wild you can find them under rocks, and hiding under other things.

WTF's are an aboreal species so they are usually found sleeping above the ground, not in it. i advise you to get a thermometer, so you can measure the temps accurately. when an aboreal species is sleeping in the substrate during the day it is usually a sign of the frog trying to escape heat, or trying to find heat. what type of heat source do you use?

My room is relaively warm, but I use a heat pad.

lukeybaby Sep 24, 2003 08:41 PM

is the heat pad underneath the tank?? if so, you frog is digging into the substrate because it is looking for more heat. heat pads are a really bad heat source to use for tree frogs, because the tree frog is aboreal and the heat is close to the ground.

you should really buy a thermometer to moniter the temp accurately.

check my site for correct heatsources to use, and care info on WTF's

just to let u know, luke, my frog also burrows into his Eco Earth Substrate. I keep him at room Temp (usually about 73 but my frog's cage is about a lizard cage). Many things i have read say it is common for these frogs to burrow. Sure, they are arboreal, but they also come to the ground to feed, breed and sleep.

P.S. A heating pad is a perfectly fine heating source.

lukeybaby Sep 25, 2003 06:35 PM

it is not "natural" for a whites tree frog to burry it self in the substrate, as i said they usaually do this when they are trying to escape heat, or find heat, or sometimes when they are sick. also heat pads are not a good heatsource, a heat pad will make the ground warm, but that is all it does, it barely raises the ambient air temp of the enclosure, that is why your frogs would be going to the ground, because they are looking for heat. yes it is natural for a WTF to come to the ground to breed and feed, but not sleep. where did you read/hear that it is natural for WTF's to sleep on the ground.

nasr_36 Sep 26, 2003 05:59 PM

..i agree with luke. Theyre just looking for any heat source they can find. Even if it means digging into the ground. Remove the pad, and add a incandeascent ontop...

lukeybaby Sep 26, 2003 10:12 PM

nasr is right, u should swith to an incandescent light bulb, they are the best and most natural heat source for WTF's.
