Just a few pics & a ?

jhm1987 Apr 08, 2010 08:02 PM

I thought I'd show off my two boas. Unfortunately, the male doesn't seem too interested in breeding or maybe it's her. I was thinking about introducing them every other month to see if his interest is sparked. Any tips?

I honestly have no idea what she is. I just know she's beautiful! She was one of those great finds. Bonus: she's the tamest snake we have.

Thanks for the reply!

Awesome pair! selective breeding all the way with that couple.. My advice is keep doing what your doing man! Mist the cages good every time to thats what my buddy does and seems to help I believe...

Yep! This is just a trial thing for us. We got her as a pet and decided to find her a b/f with the same "look" last year. We are only planning on a one time breeding, but I guess it depends on how nice the babies turn out. It should be an awesome experience!

Oh and I'll definitely have to try the misting thing. They say it helps in ball python breeding so I don't see why it wouldn't help with the boas.

Thanks!

I recommend keeping those boas separated for at least a few days after feeding for two main reasons:
1. Boas have been known to eat each other and this is usually seen shortly after a meal is eaten (probably a case of mistaken identity). It's rare, but it happens and can probably be avoided more often than not.
2. If they do start to breed, the courting process can cause one or both to regurg
A. The male will court and squeeze the female repeatedly which could cause a regurge, or
B. The male will sometimes regurg his meal in order to breed (much like snakes do when they feel threatened so they can either fight or flee better)

just a few suggestions for you. Good luck with that pairing!

Thanks for the info!

I was a bit worried after I saw the thread below about the (I believe) Hypo eating the Albino. This girl is very calm and rarely strikes for her food even. I usually lay a rat across her body and she'll eat it. BUT Better safe than sorry! I'll start seperating them.

Would you suggest putting them together a week after feeding??? Or two?

Sorry I haven't responded sooner. I haven't been on the computer much lately.

I usually wait about 3-7 days to reintroduce after a meal, depending on the size of the meal and the speed with which they're digesting it. Small meal and fast digestion = 3 days. Big meal and slow digestion = 7 days. Something in between = 4-6 days.

I've even been so careful that I've sprayed down the boas upon reintroduction to help wash away the scent of the previous meal - especially if there was any blood from the rat on the boa.

Hope this helps!
