I use Perlite with NO additives. I purchased lots back in 2006 from the Home Depot and have yet to run out......
I hear it is getting harder to find Perlite without miracle gro or other additives though......

Yeah I strated a thread just about a week ago about how hard it is to find both in some areas. I'm in central florida and None of the usual places have either. I found Perlit today at Home Depot but it has Miracle grow in it. Don't use that stuff. You can find some on Ebay if you search. Check the small mom and pop hardware stores like was mentioned but it might be wise to stock up. I've always used Vermiculite but I wanted to try Perlite just because it looks cleaner being all white. Some one said they experienced mold with Vermiculite but I never did unless the egg was bad.

You'd think that with everyone going on and on about organic this and that that we'd be able to find something without additives. I live in the Austin area and I can't walk out my door without seeing something claiming to be all natural or someone trying to sell me a hamburger made from non-hormone-tainted beef (for $2 more, of course). But try to find Perlite or vermiculite w/ no chemicals...hah!
The only places I've found were some of the local nurseries.

Just bought both for a couple bucks a bag at the local mom & pop hardware store. I use about a 50/50 mix for eggs.

I've used both alone, and mixed, and did just as well no matter which I used. I actually prefer Perlite, I feel like it lets more air around all points of the egg, while keeping most of the moisture at the bottom. But I found a HUGE bag of vermiculite a few years ago and have plenty of that. All of the Perlite I find that has no additives is in small bags.

I generally use vermiculite and buy the big bags for about $10.-$12. at a nursery. I like the coarse much better and never use the fine.

I also buy sphagnum moss in bags about as big.You can get perlite in these big bags too.
Sometimes when I buy perlite, I wait 'til after the "growing" season and get closeout prices on the smaller bags.
Much cheaper then.

Surrender Dorothy!
Just as a note, I used fine vermiculite last year cause it was all I could find and it worked just fine.
