Update on my girls.

paulbuck Apr 09, 2010 07:19 PM

And not a happy one. Got home last Sunday night from a trip to find Kali, my younger, smaller female lying in a pile of slugs. She is fine though she looked tired. Sad watching her nosing around the slugs. I didn't observe her eating any, though I may have missed it. There was one tiny premie in the pile and it would have been easy to mistake it for a ribbon of red slime.
The next day Eve was restless and I knew she was close to parturition. Sure enough Tuesday morning she starts laying around 6 am and I was there for the whole show. Slugs. There were two premies that looked nearly fully formed. I didn't have great hopes on Eve because she didn't look as big as she has in the past. Kali looked huge but she is smallish anyway.
Needless to say, bummer.
Both girls are healthy and have eaten.
Going by last years time from POS I had them due around April 5. Kali went on the 4th and Eve on the 6th. Kind of interesting.
Looking over my notes one thing may have contributed to the failure; neither snake had eaten since November. In December they both acted gravid and refused food. Unfortunately, I did not offer again. In the past Eve has eaten up until 2 months prior to giving birth so I may have screwed up not offering. Sigh.
As we like to say; 'there's always next year'.
Thanks for reading,
Paul

Sorry to hear that, Paul. But I am happy to hear that the females are doing ok... that is the most important part, IMO. They can always try again next year!

Hey Paul, Sorry to hear that. IMO it's nothing to do with feeding or not. The ova were either not fertilized or not viable.

Glad moms are OK is kinda odd they both slugged out within days of each other.

Paul,

Very sorry to hear this. I've got nothing scientific to base this on, but I agree with Dave the feeding thing probably made no difference. Don't beat yourself up over it. Thanks for keeping us updated, if nothing else sharing information helps everyone.

Thanks,
Ed
