Boa in labor for days help

serpant Apr 10, 2010 01:21 PM

Ive been breeding red tailed boas for years and never had this situation come up, the boa is 7 yrs old about 9 foot and very girthy was never bred until this season. all was well and her expected due date was april 15th, on wed the april 7th i found two dead babies in the cage fully developed, i did not disturb her until that evening when there were no more babies, the next afternoon i soaked her in warm water for about 2 hours and put her back in her cage with a huge black hide box, she looked to be contracting mouth wide open and the mass was reaching the vent so i once again kept the glass covered and left her the next morning still nothing , she is huge probably 40 or so babies still in her, i dont know if this is ok or should i have her over to the vet, any ideas of other expeiriences like this please let me know thanks again.

Since you are experienced and know what you are looking at

I won't ask the stupid questions

The fact that she is due on the 15th is what makes me hesitate

I would've expected her to have passed fecal matter
and or urates with those early babies

If she looks seriously distressed I'd do the Vet but my first
thought is to wait until at least the due date
If she doesn't appear to be in serious trouble

If she is distressed it sounds like possibly an
obstruction of some type to me

Sometimes you gotta go with your gut feeling

And sometimes you have to really get in there as I did two years back with this Hypo Hog that was compacted with old slugs...

good luck.

Shawn Exactly who I was thinking of , that has hands on
experience with an obstruction !

There are a few other people that have talked
about obstructed babies

I haven't experienced this yet

Ok well thinking back i do recall she did pass fecal matter with the two babies as well as after i had soaked her and she was seeming to try an push, still nothing yet what i am feeling feels loose yet firm not like a slug i let her pass through my hands today no slolid lumps just feels like a gravid snake, i find it hard to believe she would of just passed the two dead neonates and hold the rest untill they were to term. because you would think if she started contracting those out she would of been forced into full blown labor,, although after looking at the dead ones i noticed they do seem premature fully patterened but colors hadnt shown up yet. So i dont know what to do here just let her go or have her exrayed the local exotic vet seems to think its no big hurry but sometimes i believe we have more expeirience than these guys. thanks for feedback ill try an post a picture tomarrow wait till you see the huge mass in this girl..

Well I think she was just trying to pass some poop and they have
to work extra hard to do that especially late term.
Its like they're jumping through hoops to take a poop

Sometimes they slip and a couple kids pop out too soon

So I'm hoping that's what happened here
