caging racks versus actual gages

Raybrooks1 Apr 10, 2010 04:04 PM

I have a delema on my hands and Im coming here to give me some insight there are many caging manufactures out there that that i love their cages boaphile is by far the best caging ive seen but im lazy lol i love my racks and my snakes are out growing my racks so here is go with finding new caging but i dont want to spend 5000 bucks on the racks ive been looking for tubs suitable to house large boa's in but the cheapest i found was the vision tubs at 210 a wack and im not paying that lol i was wondering if there was a place to get same size tubs for less ive been to every store i could think of and nothing

now if i dont find the tubs im going to boaphile id rather have the ease of a rack but the boaphile cages look more appealing

here are the tubs id like to find 52 long 34 wide 12 deep but 48 by 24 by 12 would work any suggestions would be nice i dont like melamine except for rack support

so for you breeders out there that diy time to help another diy lol wish jeff would build a boa rack for adults

so any advise would be greatly appreciated

Ray

Hi Ray,

There are 2 other tub suppliers I know of that you might want to look into. They are listed below.

Fusion Tubs
Fusion 400 or Fusion 450 tubs
www.ngmexotics.com

VE175 tubs

I know you didn't mention the vision boa tubs but I definitely recommend them for boas up to 6'. After I sold off everything else (cages and boas) I kept my vision boa tubs as I knew I'd get boas again shortly and they were my preferred option to use.

thanks randy im looking at a vision rack or boaphile caging right now they both have their pros and cons like the rack will be a lil difficult to regulate heat in a open air room like my garage and the boaphile cage being cleaned lol aspen and a vacuum cleaner probably going to be the option of choice

The difficulty getting in and doing a thorough cleaning is why I will move away from cages for good (other then display) You do have the ability with the open air racks to attach insulation such as a reflectix type (more or less bubble wrap lined with aluminum) that works wonders. That is what I used on my open air racks and it provides a very good barrier to the surrounding temps, and if you ever move them to a temp controlled room you can remove it easily.

well im seriously looking at those tubs i like the 400's but im not to sure they will be large enough for larger female boa's from fusion they look a lil small though but ive seen people keep a large female in a boaphile 421 d which is a 4 ft by 2 ft cage so any thoughts on this would be appreciated

I believe that 95% of the time you would not need a cage any bigger than a 421d for a full grown female bci. However different people have different opinions. As a side note. the fusion 400 tubs have 80 more square inches of floor space than a 421d. Just some food for thought.

Knowing you don't like open racks like Vision (personally I don't like their inferior heating). And you like the ease of maintenance with racks over cages. You might want to check out the VE175 Animal Plastics Rack. I don't personally have one but I have heard excellent things about it from people who do. Here is a link (its under the "What's New" section)

is the ve -175 large enough to house a large boa? i love the look of the Rack and the shelves is a pluss i really dont like the open rack vision provides but that animal plastics rack is definitely an option if it can house the large females i have and im going to aquire more this summer @ the San Diego Reptile show lol

I would think they are big enough. A 48" x 24" cage has 1152 square inches of floor space. The VE-175 has 1113 square inches of floor space. 39 square inches isn't much at all. If you take a tape measure and stretch it out 53 inches, you can get a mental picture to how big the tub really is.

well im looking into other possibility turns out fusion is in the process of making a 52 by 34 by 11 tub so now it is a race between the fusion tubs and the ve 125

I think aside from Freedom breeder rack which are ridiculously expensive..... I like Animal Plastics.... they have a rack that fits those large 52" tubs... it's on their "New Stuff" page.....

But personally I only use racks for juveniles up to 4 feet and males.... I keep all my females in full size cages with some sort of climbing structure...... I've seen the difference excercise can make in the overall musculature of a boa with access to climbing structures..... So I try to keep my females fit.....
