Gecko acting strangely

stefaran Sep 21, 2003 07:33 PM

My gecko was doing great until today...she has been eating good I dust her mealworms almost every day since she is still growing (she's about 42g) and all of a sudden she seems really weak and when she walks she shakes a little. When I pick her up she just sits there barly grabbing onto my hand. She seems sick, but I can't imagine why.

She was with a few other females (they are doing just fine), I separated her, but other than that I don't know what to do. She has lost a couple a grams over the last week but seemed fine until today!

Please, any suggestions appreciated!

Hi, Do you have a dish with calcium in the tank? I always had a hard time getting the powder to stick to the mealies so I put some in the mealie dish and they get some when they grab one.

It sorta sounds like a calcium problem, but it could be something else. Maybe with some more info someone may have a better answer for you. How old is she and how many others is she housed with, just females or a male too? Are her poops normal? Showing an intersest in food?

She always has calcium available in her mealworm bowl. Also, she was in with a male, but she lost a little weight so I took her out; she was fine then. Since then she was in with some females until today when I separated her.

I would see if she starts acting better now that she is by herself, but if she doesn't or gets worse in anyway, I would talk to your vet asap. Also if her poop doesn't look right make sure you get a fecal on it.

Maybe someone else has some suggestions also.

Hi

Doe's she look like she is bulging around her middle section, like she could have eggs inside of her?.

A female when she is pregnant and getting close to delivery, can stop eating a week to two weeks before she drops her eggs.

Sincerely, TLB

I really don't think she is gravid. I wish that were the problem!
She is just very lethargic and just seems like she doesn't feel good. I'll watch her closely; if she doesn't improve, I may have a hard time finding a good reptile vet where I live.

When she weakly walks around her tank she won't even open her eyes. She just staggers across the tank and crawls into her cave.
I'm getting worried!

I would get her to a vet., things don't sound good at all and I would say there is a good chance she has a parasite problem.

I have had sick geckos before and the not opening eyes and stagering, indicates something wrong inside to me. If it were me I wouldn't waite.

Also make sure the vet knows that you have other reptiles at home that have been exposed to this animal! If there is a treatable problem then you will have to treat the whole crew!

I bought a gecko that seemed as if she had lost weight and was getting really sick. Well, off she went to the vet, who put her on Flagyl, Panacur, and Albon. She's midway through the beggining of her treatment and doing much better. She ate her first crickets two nights ago since the whole time I've had her!

She was on liquid diet and I think the vitamins helped her with the shaking and all that, because she was very bad when I got her and improved quickly when I added vitamins to what I was feeding her. What do you gut-load your crickets with, do you think that could be part of the problem?

Anyway, I hope she gets better and let us know what happens
