emergency question about toxicity of a firebelly toad to an adult inland bearded dragon

grouchyrocker87 Sep 21, 2003 07:45 PM

A few days ago I noticed that there were only 3 of the 4 firebelly toads in their cage that is on the shelf above the bearded dragon cage. I cannot find the frog in the rest of my room and the only other possible thing that may have happened is the cat may have gotten it, but this is highly unlikely since she is never in my room. I think grouchy(one of the bds) may have eaten it if it fell into her cage. Her cage doent have a lid on it and is a 75 gallon aquarium that sits directly under the toad cage on the shelf below. She has been acting a bit "depressed" lately, but I hope its because she is stressed out by her boyfriend who lives in the cage next to her wanting to breed all the time. Would a firebelly toad have enough toxins to kill her if she did eat it? I know everyone is going to tell me to take her to the vet right away, but if shes going to die from it, I figure there isn't much a vet can do if its been in her for 2-3 days already. Thanks for any help.

As foul tasting as these frogs (toads) appear to be to predators, I doubt your dragon actually ingested it. I don't know if the poison in FBT's will kill, it seems like more of a nasty tasting substance and less toxic than other amphibians. But she may have ingested enough poison to make her ill. If you cannot find the firebellie, then she may have swallowed it. I had dragons with whites tree frogs and they would show interest in them, but none were ever eaten. If she did ingest frog or poison, there probably isn't much you can do for her. Is she gaping or does she seem disoriented? I've seen the effects of this toxin and it isually appears the animal is "drunk". At first there is a lot of face wiping, drooling, runny nose, gaping, then the "drunken" stage. With a little luck, you will find your FBT and your dragon will be ok.

How to get your wife to like toads; 1.Get a male toad. 2.Get him to hug your wifes wrist (amplexus). 3. Tickle him so he chirps in protest. 4.Say "Awww, he likes you". Note; Make sure he pees first or you may receive bodily harm during this procedure.
